Description: 

This series of talks will cover (briefly) classical approaches to geophysical inverse theory and (more extensively) recent Bayesian inversion methods, with applications in ocean acoustics and seismology. Classical inversion is generally based on local linear approximations and frequentist statistics, and provides efficient analytic solutions but limited ability to quantify uncertainties. In contrast, fully-nonlinear Bayesian inversion approaches provide rigorous uncertainty analysis but are computationally demanding. Further, Bayesian formulations (such as trans-dimensional inversion) can be applied to the fundamental problem of model selection, e.g., determining appropriate model parameterizations consistent with the resolving power of the data. Applications of these theories will include geoacoustic inversion, matched-field localization/tracking in an uncertain environment, ambient noise inversion, marine mammal localization via warping mode dispersion, and earthquake tomography.
